NawiriTech Alumna, Bilha Jeje, shares her data science experience in the Anta Diop Sprint

Enrolling in NawiriTech’s foundational data science course, specifically the Anta Diop sprint, marked a transformative journey for me. Prior to this, my understanding of data science was fragmented and attempts to piece together different aspects had proven futile. NawiriTech provided clarity and coherence to my learning experience.

From the very start, NawiriTech stood out with its meticulous application and screening process, emphasizing the program's commitment to excellence. During the interview, what resonated deeply was the team's genuine interest in understanding my goals. This personalized approach, combined with the program's overarching focus on creating social impact, shifted my mindset from merely a quest for academic inquiry to a dedication to real-world problem-solving.

Upon receiving the admission email, I outlined the goals I aspired to achieve by the end of the program. Little did I anticipate the profound role that soft skills would play, especially considering my limited exposure to the corporate world. The learning community at NawiriTech was a vibrant mix of diversity with colleagues from 9 African countries, encouraging everyone to contribute actively. In this inclusive environment, my imposter syndrome disintegrated, paving the way for a mindset that embraces continuous learning. Public speaking, once a daunting challenge, became a forte, and the carefully curated group size ensured a perfect balance of manageability and accountability. The alternating focus on problem-solving with programming and statistics was a game-changer, catering to learners of all levels. The sprint format, although intense, was surprisingly inclusive and accommodating to beginners seamlessly through well-structured teaching sessions.

The group breakout sessions were a highlight for me, as they fostered collaborative problem-solving and created a space for shared insights. Furthermore, open communication channels with facilitators enhanced the learning experience, making sure no questions went unanswered. Occasionally, we had guest speaker sessions spanning both technical and non-technical topics, providing a well-rounded perspective while learning. The program's pinnacle was the mandatory closing project that served as a testament to the depth of understanding and impact achieved by colleagues.

Post-program, I seamlessly integrated the tools, culture, and structure into my ongoing learning journey. I have crafted concepts tailored to my geospatial background, confidently venturing into machine learning with support from the facilitators and the tight-knit alumni community. For me, NawiriTech transcends being merely a course; it has evolved into a dynamic ecosystem with post-program support and a diverse African community, propelling my growth in the data science space. This unique blend of technical and soft skills, coupled with an unwavering support system, has empowered me to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of data science with confidence and purpose.
